Self defence is a combination between movements, techniques, and tactics.
It’s also a precise balance between speed, fluidity, flexibility, precision and power to reach the highest Effectiveness.
You need to practice some styles to get the right combination.
In my experience i suggest: Karate (Shotokan, Kyukushinkay, Gojuryu) for stability.
Taekwando for flexibility.
Aikido & Taichi for fluidity.
Jujutsu, thaijutsu, kenpo, Judo for close combat.
Muaythai for power.
Wing Chun & Jeet Kune Do, for speed and precision.
Shaolin Kung Fu for tactics and knowledge of essence of all martial arts.
I did practice all those styles and more, for 35 years of hard training, which leads me to create my own art: Taiping Shu (the art of peace).
Ninpo, Ninjutsu, Samurai jutsu, Arnis, Escrima, Kubodo, Kendo, Silat, Kalaryppayatt: for weapons: a river of techniques.
The most important thing is culture, philosophy and meaning: you have to read books, know about legendary Masters like Funakushi, Oyama, Kanu, Ushiba, Yamagushi, Takeda, Musashi, Wong Fai Hung, Ip Man, and Bruce Lee.
And some legends of our time like Gracie family (Brazilian Jujutsu), Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa….
Because martial arts is not only about combat, but it’s about your life: to have more knowledge, to get better everyday, to become a real Master of yourself.
